Charlie started shooting at Malvern College and, after a brief gap year in the Army, continued at Oxford University finishing with a full Blue as team captain. His shooting career in the Army included a number of tours to Jersey and South Africa and was punctuated by frequent overseas operational tours (to Northern Ireland and, alongside close American allies, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan). A former sniper instructor, a highlight was as the MOD’s lead for infantry capability for three years – shaping small arms procurement and championing marksmanship across the UK’s Armed Forces.
Now retired after over 36 years’ service he is able to spend significantly more time offshore sailing, cycling, alpine ski-touring and climbing and has recently found the time to take up triathlon. He is looking forward to this first ever non-work trip to the USA – but is still no closer to his dream of crossing the American continent on a Harley-Davidson!
