Hats off to Ben who organised and issued all the ammo for the morning in record time so we could get underway. However, after this promising start, numerous electronic devices overheated once shooting commenced, with some having to resort to sharing equipment mid-shoot.

500 yards saw some very intense heat during the peak of the day, and some melting of shooting equipment occurred. Ellie had to detach parts of her jacket that had fused together, which is a contrast to her jacket melting apart in Guyana. Alex has also had to resort to supergluing his footwear together (again), although thankfully he did this without his feet in them, otherwise the team doctor would be in even more demand than he has been already.

The Adj spent most of 500 and 600 yards fixing various West Indian rifles, but was allowed to shoot on the final detail at 600 where he put in a 34.4 despite being quite frazzled, well done Adj. 600 proved slightly more fickle than previous details, and had to be watched closely on the tight ICFRA targets. It’s clear that shooting on the right of the range has some wind that is drawn down over the trees from the right and sometimes comes back on itself, although we are getting used to it.

Once the scores started to flow in, it was obvious that Ed Feast has had a very good day, dropping just 2 points across the 3 shoots, which in this heat is quite the achievement. He leads the Grand Aggregate on 5 off. Kit Crabtree is 3 points back, with Rupert Knight and Ed Dickson both a further point behind. There were very few possibles on the range today, either from the England team or the rest of the field, but Kit did record a 50.1 (degrees C) ground temperature! Rupert had the only 50 on the range at 500 and Rick, Moose, and Ed Feast managed a 35 at 600. Our fellow countryman Richard Hirst also recorded a 35.2 to win the 600.

After a number of shirt swaps, the wacky races were then under way back to the hotel, allowing for an hour or so of downtime before a casual team dinner. Others opted for dessert at the Fat Urchin (the coffee place that a number of the team have been frequenting during our time here), although mis-sold on the availability of a cheese board.

The Grand Aggregate finishes tomorrow with a 2+10 at 300, 2+7 at 500 and 2+15 at 600 yards. Maintaining concentration right to the end will be critical.

To allow time for breakfast at the hotel for the three teams staying there, message 1 at the range was pushed back to 9.30.This diarist notes we have taken a different route to and from the hotel on each journey

[6,10

post-1693","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-diary","category-news
["GET
