The Lions programme has now been running for nine years, providing coaching and mentoring to 99 candidates. Many have gone on to represent the club in National, Mackinnon, Lawrence, European Long Range and touring teams, as well as GB representation and even a Sovereign’s Prize winner. This is a fantastic achievement for both the programme and the individuals who have committed to it.
However, not all participants have yet achieved their first (or next) cap. For 2026–27, the Lions management team has therefore decided not to recruit new participants, but instead to focus on supporting past Lions who have yet to achieve a cap following the programme. This recognises the commitment of those participants, while also making the most of the time and expertise already invested by our coaches and mentors, who have given their time freely.
The year will also give us an opportunity to review and refresh the programme’s content and format, using our experience to date and feedback from candidates — “owning our own performance”, as we encourage others to do.
The 2026–27 programme will see the in-person and on-range element focused on two weekends rather than three, being 17th – 18th April & 26th – 27th June. The content of these weekends will be formed from the reflection provided in applications and attendance at both weekends will be mandatory, so that candidates can gain the maximum benefit from a programme tailored to their needs.
If you have been a Lion at any point, have yet to achieve a (further) cap following your participation and would like to apply for the 2026–27 developmental year, please complete and return the application form by 13 September to lions@englishtwenty.org.uk.
